For those that already struggle with going to bed on time, this small change could cause a greater amount of slept debt. In fact, science shows that losing as little as an hour of sleep will result in sleep debt. Is it possible to recover this sleep by \u201ccatching up\u201d?<\/p>\n<p>Catching up on sleep is easier said than done. To recover that one hour of sleep loss, research suggests you would need to sleep at least adequately for four days to make up for that one hour, a process which may be easier said than done for many.<\/p>\n<p>Circadian rhythms are highly sensitive to sleep cycles, and they are easily disrupted by staying up all night or getting up earlier than usual. The body will typically begin to secrete melatonin around nine o\u2019clock to promote sleep, but the circadian rhythms can be affected by light, which is why it\u2019s strongly advised that you not use your phone at bedtime. Consistently going to bed late will make your body want to stay awake later.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re feeling particularly sleep deprived, consider a nap in the middle of the day.
