RLS or restless leg syndrome is a condition characterized by an irresistible urge to move the legs, especially during the evening. Symptoms include the intense feeling of pins and needles on the leg, leg aches, or recurring itch, tingling sensation, and the urge to move one’s legs around. This condition is usually seen in more women than men. It typically occurs while laying down or sitting and can disrupt one’s sleep, leaving you feeling exhausted the following day. When one’s sleep is compromised, your overall health is prone to suffering as well.

It may surprise most to know that RLS is considered a sleep disorder, but due to the nature of the condition, it has a huge impact on one’s sleeping habits. Those with RLS will encounter difficulty falling asleep and it may cause multiple awakenings throughout the night, affect the quality of sleep. Studies show severe cases of restless leg syndrome get 5 hours or less of sleep each night which can be detrimental to one’s health.

Did you know exercise has been proven to help one get better rest at night? Aerobic exercise and lower body resistance training has been demonstrated to alleviate symptoms of restless leg syndrome. Exercising 30 minutes a day, not too close to bedtime is a great way to improve your sleep. Those with RLS may want to consider sleeping with a pillow between the legs. This will prevent the nerves in your legs from compressing fewer times throughout the night.
