Sleeping Techniques

Having a good night’s rest is important for physical and mental health. Sleep deprivation can affect your energy, productivity, emotions, and even your weight. Changing a few daytime routines and bedtime habits can improve your performance while you’re awake.

To have quality sleep, try getting in sync with your body’s natural sleep-wake cycle by establishing a time to sleep and wake up at the same time every day of the week. Try avoiding sleeping in on weekends because if your weekend/weekday sleep schedules differ, then you’re more likely to be tired.

Controlling your exposure to light may also influence the quality of your sleep. Your mind releases melatonin when it’s dark, which makes you sleepy. The melatonin is less when there is light, which causes you to be more alert. At night avoid phones, tablets, computers, or TVs, especially an hour or two before going to sleep. The bright lights from these devices suppress melatonin, making it harder to rest. The room you sleep in should be dark to help you get a good night’s rest.

Exercising also helps with sleeping better at night because it speeds up metabolism, elevates body temperature, and stimulates hormones like cortisol. Try not to exercise too close to your bedtime as it may interfere with your sleep.

Eating may also affect how you sleep. Not eating large meals before going to bed helps your body have less stomach problems, preventing you from going to the restroom late at night. Consuming caffeine and nicotine may cause sleeping problems as much as twelve hours after consuming them, and alcohol before bed doesn’t help either.

Improving your sleeping environment makes a difference to your quality of sleep. Keeping the noise down, the room cool, your bed comfortable, and using your bed solely for its intended purposes will help you sleep better.
