The article provides several examples and studies of the ties between sleep and health. Ongoing sleep deprivation, for example, has been shown to have potential consequences during the long-term, from increasing the risk of diabetes to depression and dementia. Some of these chronic conditions may also make a person more susceptible to contracting coronavirus.

Growing research further indicates that sleep deprivation impairs the capacity of a human to battle a disease once he or she is sick. In a variety of studies, higher rates of respiratory infections, head colds, and associated illnesses were reported by people with sleep disturbances, people who get less than five to six hours of sleep each night, and people with poor sleep quality levels (the proportion of time spent sleeping during the night).
