For years, you’ve probably been told that the blue light emitted by your smartphone isn’t doing you any favors in helping you sleep at night. You may have also heard that using a night mode that casts a yellow light over the screen is better.
All of this may no longer be true.
A study published in Current Biology suggests that the yellow tint may be worse than the blue light emitted by the phone. Why’s that? Yellow light is closer to what daylight looks like while blue light has similarities to the light a person naturally experiences during sundown. The research is still very much in its infancy but if you’re finding you can’t sleep because your phone is keeping you up, there are steps you can take.
If you absolutely must use your phone, try and get into the habit of winding down. Modern Android phones, for example, have a Digital Wellbeing feature that can help with falling asleep when it’s bedtime, such as turning your phone screen gray to prevent light from keeping you up. Most smartphones also have a blue light filter that can turn on automatically at sundown.
